Meet Our New SLP

Getting to know Eytan Barak behind the credentials

We are so pleased to welcome our latest addition to the Toronto Adult Speech Clinic SLP team: Eytan Barak.

It can be challenging to enter a new space and work with someone on something as intimate as your communication- especially in this current virtual care climate- So we want to help you get to know who you’ll be working with.

Many of you may already know myself, Jordan Scholl, the founder of Toronto Adult Speech Clinic. I have also been the sole practicing speech-language pathologist at TASC for the past 4 years. If you want to read more about me, you can check out my bio page here.

In this brief interview profile, I asked Eytan some questions about becoming an SLP, how he views his approach to therapy, and also some interesting facts about what he does when he’s not working as an SLP.

1.What made you choose a career as a speech-language pathologist?

Eytan:

I always knew I wanted to work with people. I love talking to people, getting to know them, and finding out ways I can make their days and lives easier and better. I was drawn to speech pathology because it combined two of my great loves: working with people and neuroscience.

It always amazes me to learn and relearn how many things are involved when a person communicates. Being able to help people use their strengths and recognize the areas in which they could use more work is my bread and butter and I love doing it every day.

2.How would you describe your therapeutic approach in three words?

Eytan:

Functional. Introspective. Collaborative.

3.What is your favourite part about your job?

Eytan:

For me, my favourite part about being a speech-language pathologist is learning about all the different things my clients do and finding the ways in which I can help them refine those skills. Any family, work, or social interaction has an aspect of communication which makes my job of identifying strengths and breakdowns very easy.

4.What do you do when you aren’t in the clinic?

Eytan:

I got into running and rowing, building up my endurance for possible long distance running. I also love listening to political, historical, and scientific podcasts, and recently getting in some baking (thanks COVID). I also consider spoiling my cat at least a part time job.

5.Do you have any hobbies or special talents that might surprise someone?

Eytan:

I used to train in Karate, logging about 14 years under my (black) belt, under the tutelage of my step-dad who is a world champion.

6.Other than English, do you speak any other languages?

Eytan:

Yes! I speak Hebrew, Russian, and Spanish.
