Courtney Cain-Porter (she/her) is a speech-language pathologist in Hamilton, Ontario. Courtney hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she graduated from Dalhousie University School of Human Communication Disorders. She has worked with adults and families in a variety of settings including hospital acute care, rehabilitation, long term care, schools and in the community.
In Courtney’s career, she has provided support for stuttering, motor speech and articulation, dysphagia, aphasia, and social communication/autism spectrum disorder. Given a philosophy that communication is a highly individualized and personal tool for everyone, she is enthusiastic in using a solutions-focused approach to speech, voice and language intervention with clients. Curiosity and collaboration are primary tools at the onset of her time with clients, working to first understand, individualize and prioritize the goals of the client. Her master’s thesis focused on voice quality and its impact on gender identification of voice in the transgender community.
Prior to a career as a speech-language pathologist, Courtney completed an undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University in music with a focus in voice performance and music therapy followed by a Diploma in Opera. She provided voice training at the Canadian Conservatory of Music, and regular support under a music therapist for people at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Long-term care both in Halifax.
When she is not working, Courtney seeks time for acting in community theater, running, planning travel and as an informal chauffeur for her kids.
