<image:caption>Dysodia is a dysfunction in the trained singing voice Dysodia- a dysfunction in the trained singing voice- results from hyperfunctional or hypofunctional voice use. This can mean the quality, power, or technical aspects of the voice are affected. A registered speech-language pathologist/voice therapist who is trained to work with singers can help restore function to a dysodic voice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One-third of the world's workforce depend on their voice as a primary tool at work With so many jobs requiring the use of the voice, it is no wonder there is such a large proportion of the population who are “occupational voice users.” This means that they not only use their voice for work and day-to-day activities, but depend on it. This includes people like singers, actors, teachers, lawyers, radio and TV personalities, therapists, fitness instructors, and many more. Voice therapy with a registered speech-language pathologist can help protect the voice from misuse or damage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The voice reacts to changes in how we feel and what we are going through The relationship between our emotional changes and changes in our voices continues to be investigated today. Your voice issues are NOT in your head. Read that again. If you start to notice changes in your voice due to anxiety, stress, depression, or any other sudden or chronic emotional shift- believe them. When you are ready, a voice therapist (sometimes in collaboration with other healthcare professionals) is ready to support you and your voice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cannabis (weed or marajuana) inhalation is associated with changes in voice function A recent systematic review by Meehan-Atrash, et al. in August 2019 compiled results on the effects of cannabis inhalation on respiratory and vocal function. The review found that there was an association between cannabis-only smoking and changes in vocal fold appearance (darkening), respiratory symptoms, and reduced lung function. These changes can impact overall health and function of the voice. In cannabis smokers, both heavy smoking habits or light but long-term smoking habits demonstrated these effects.</image:caption>

<image:title>The VoiceNotes - Changes in hormones can result in changes in the voice (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Changes in hormones can result in changes in the voice For many years, research has established a relationship between the hormonal changes that occur during menstruation and after menopause with fluctuations in voice quality. When these hormones fluctuate, they result in physiological changes at the level of the vocal folds- for example, as estrogen levels decrease, water retention increases. This can make the vocal folds more bulky and cause issues like greater fatigue and instability, loss of power in the voice, and a reduced access to higher pitches. For those who are not singers, hormonal changes still impact the vocal folds and can impact qualities of the speaking voice- such as lower or creaky voice quality, or an increased amount of effort required to project the voice. Whatever the impact on a person’s life- research suggests that voice therapy with a registered speech language pathologist can reduce the impact of these hormone-related changes and improve overall vocal function.</image:caption>

<image:title>The VoiceNotes - Dry winter air can cause the vocal folds to become dehydrated (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Dry winter air can cause the vocal folds to become dehydrated Using a humidifier, can help ensure moisture is being applied to the air we breathe. Because the vocal folds sit at the top of our airway- air is the only way we can deliver moisture directly to them. When we drink water or tea, the soothing we feel is in the throat, but the liquid goes into the esophagus before it ever reaches the vocal folds (otherwise we would cough because liquid would be trying to go directly into our lungs!). In addition, it can take several hours for the water we consume to be disseminated throughout the body. Using a humidifier means that as we breathe- that moist air goes directly by our vocal folds on its way to our lungs. This way, we can support the vocal folds and keep our voices healthy on these dry winter days.</image:caption>

That is what the environment at Toronto Adult Speech Clinic is designed to be.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By avoiding use of ma'am or sir on the phone you can avoid misgendering someone based on how their voice sounds If you don't know the person you're talking on the phone with, avoid the use of "Ma'am," "Sir," or other male/female pronouns. In my work with people who are transgender or on the gender spectrum, one of their major goals is to not be "misgendered" on the phone. An example of misgendering someone would be referring to someone who does not identify as a male as a "Sir." It's a simple tip that goes a long way to making everyone feel safe and respected.</image:caption>

<image:title>The VoiceNotes - Breathing should be silent and relaxed at all times (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Breathing should be silent and relaxed at all times Air is a fluid and moves around freely. If we create resistance by constricting our mouth and throat, we hear this as "turbulence" or a noisy inhale. Think about the air moving around you vs. through a vent in the wall. It's not always possible to feel whether or not your neck or throat muscles are tight, but you can listen to your breath. Silent inhales = a relaxed system, which allows for healthy voice and speech production. In addition, if you are trying to take more air in or get a deeper breath, then a relaxed breath prevents over-involvement of the neck and shoulder muscles that often lead to that familiar sensation of a shallow breath.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Communication and Voice use is smarter and healthier when we know how it works "My therapeutic philosophy is simple: Know Your Machine- if you understand how your voice works, suddenly you don't feel so powerless to affect change in it." -Jordan Scholl, SLP At Toronto Adult Speech Clinic, we believe the only way to truly empower our clients is through education. Most of us take our voice and communication for granted. We think that because we've always spoken this way- that's how it has to be. This leads to the misconception that when we experience loss of voice, changes in quality of our voice, or can't seem to communicate effectively- there is nothing we can do except "wait it out." Regardless of your age, experience or skill level, or your communication goals- it is possible to achieve change in your voice and your communication. The first step is believing that to be true. The second step is letting our speech-language pathologist help you prove it to yourself!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The voice is our embodiment of Self and training it can help make sure we are communicating our most authentic Selves Your voice is your unique way of expressing who you are. Taking care of your voice and remaining authentic in your expression of Self go hand-in-hand. Life changes, anxiety, stress, etc. can impact the quality of the voice. Knowing how to care and nurture yourself and your voice can often empower you and help you emerge stronger. This principle is especially relevant for our clients at Toronto Adult Speech Clinic who are transgender or on the gender spectrum and seeking voice therapy or communication training.</image:caption>

<image:title>The VoiceNotes - The Connection Between Sleep and Hydration (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>The Connection Between Sleep and Hydration Time to wake up to this refreshing fact about your vocal health! Research has shown that people who get less than SIX hours of sleep a night release less of the hormone vasopressin. Vasopressin is required for the kidneys to absorb water we drink for our bodies to use. So- regardless of how much water you drink before bed, you might still end up waking up dehydrated! Don't fret though! If you live a busy life and find it difficult to catch six hours of sleep each night, just try and be sure to drink 1-2 glasses of water right when you wake up. *Remember*: hydration is important for healthy vocal fold vibration and muscle function.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Vocal naps can be an important practice to improve vocal health in occupational voice users Just like the rest of your body, keeping your voice healthy means knowing when to rest it. If you talk a lot at work, a good rule of thumb is to take 10-15 minutes of silence for every 90 minutes spent using your voice. If you are a fitness instructor, singer, or other high-intensity voice user, consider this kind a rest more frequently between classes, practice, or performances.</image:caption>

<image:title>The VoiceNotes - Manual Therapy and Massage for Voice Therapy (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Manual Therapy and Massage for Voice Therapy Your voice is a system not a single structure. It depends on the intricate coordination of muscles and movement to work. For occupational voice users, who rely on their voice for their work and income, subtle changes in the efficiency of the vocal system can have a profound impact on the ability to perform your job. Whether you teach a class, have a concert to sing, or need your voice to argue an important case in court- if we rely on our voices, we will sometimes force them to work even when they're telling us they can't. In some cases, our systems realign and with a bit of rest and perseverance our voice returns. In other cases, we push through, develop bad habits from overworking muscles, and the reduced function can be more chronic or lead to more serious issues. Manual therapy alone or in combination with other forms of voice therapy, can restore equilibrium to the vocal system and improve the function of the voice. In that way, manual therapy can be helpful at both preventing damage from overuse and restoring function if the damage has already been done. Prevention is always the best medicine, but our speech-language pathologist, Jordan Scholl, is here for you, as a fellow occupational voice user- whatever your vocal needs are. That's our passion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Group Fitness Instructors and Their Voices With some studies reporting acute vocal changes over 78% in group fitness instructors (GFIs) and only slightly lower for chronic voice changes- vocal health education has become the buzzing topic in the fitness industry. And it should. In speaking to GFIs, it is often thought that a little fatigue, weakness, or hoarseness is “normal” after teaching a class. As someone who trains and rehabilitates voices every day, let me assure you it is NOT- and it can be a precursor to or indication of more serious vocal issues. There are so many things you can do to ensure that your voice and therefore your career has longevity as a GFI. Continue to educate yourself and pay attention to the sensation of your voice- we do it for the rest of the body when we exercise so why do we neglect our voices? If you’re looking for a place to start, I published a 3-post blog series on vocal health and considerations just for GFIs linked in my bio.</image:caption>

<image:title>Infographics - Changes in hormones can result in changes in the voice (Copy)</image:title>

<image:title>Infographics - Dry winter air can cause the vocal folds to become dehydrated (Copy)</image:title>

<image:title>Infographics - Manual Therapy and Massage for Voice Therapy (Copy)</image:title>
